Buying and Selling Domains to Make Money – The Easiest Job You Will Ever Have
You may not know about it, but there is an entire world of domain traders who make millions of dollars buying and selling domain names. They are called “domainers” and the activity is called “domaining”. They usually lurk beneath the radar until some huge sale such as the recently concluded sale of Candy.com for M catches tha attention of the mainstream press. Truth is, there is tons of money to be made in domain trading, and one of the most prominent entrepreneurs in the world – Bill Gates – has even gone on record to say that domain names will appreciate in value faster than any commodity known to man.
Far from the usual misconception, profiting from domain names did not end with the dot com boom of the late 20th century. In fact, with the deeper penetration of the internet, it has only got enlarged, making millionaires out of more and more people, and giving thousands of others a very significant income.
So where do you start if you want to wet your beak in this gigantic pool of profits? Your first steps would be to learn as much there is to know about this industry. Two great places to get introduced are the prominent domain forums – NamePros.com, and DNForum.com. While the latter has a one time paid membership, the former is free. These forums offer a wealth of information that can ease you into this industry and the process behind profiting from domaining.
Largely, domaining involves buying a domain for cheap, promoting it to a buyer for a higher price, or sitting on it until one comes along. In many ways, it is like real estate flipping (the kind popularized by various TV shows) – you buy a piece of property, renovate it (in the case of domain names, you could perhaps start a site on it to add to its value), then sell off to the right buyer. The profits made in this field are immense, with people making thousands of dollars within hours.
But of course, this is simplifying things to a huge extent. Like any industry, domaining too has its complicated practices, variations, ups and downs. Your best bet is to start off at the forums, ask questions, and learn as much as you can for as long as you can.
